The Secret to Improved Fitness & Weight Loss

AWC > Fitness & Weightloss > The Secret to Improved Fitness & Weight Loss

I promise that this is not some crazy gimmick.  The secret to improved fitness and weight loss that I'm about to share with you is founded in exercise science and a fundamental principle of fitness.  If you want to be stronger, have more endurance or overcome that weight loss plateau then lean in a little closer and pay attention.

There are 3 main Fitness Principles:
  • Overload
  • Specificity
  • Progression

The Overload Principle is the secret to a more fit body and quick weight loss (We'll tackle the other two principles in upcoming weeks.)  If you can implement the overload principle into each one of your workouts for the next 6 weeks I promise that you will see a marked improvement in your body.

The Overload Principle is really quite simple.  Intensity is central to the Overload Principle, which states:  In order to increase your fitness level you have to push beyond your comfort zone when exercising.

There are a few ways that you can apply the Overload Principle:
  1. Up the intensity:  jog faster, lift heavier weights, jump higher, etc.
  2. Go longer: add 2 minutes to your workout, add an extra 10 seconds to your intervals or run a quarter mile longer than you are used to.
  3. Try something new:  add some sprints into your normal jog, try a new group exercise class at the gym or try free weights instead of the machines.  You'll be amazed at how just trying something new or doing your workout just a little bit differently will challenge you.
So again, my challenge for you over the next 6 weeks is to Overload during each workout.  Each Monday I'll be posting a WOWbodyNOW Killer Workout that will help you apply the overload principle.  This week I've added a bonus 90 second core challenge at the end of our workout.  So get your sneakers on and fill up your water bottle and let's Overload together!
