Commo Blackout - I Never Knew
On, "Married to the Army - Alaska" there's been much talk about the 'Commo Blackout'. During my husband's 1 year deployment in Afghanistan I never really noticed Communication Blackouts.
Here's why...
I talked to my husband on the phone once a week. I spoke to him through email or messenger systems maybe every 3 days. It's not like I could pick up the phone and call him and got a 'Commo Blackout' recording. He communicated with me when he could. Where he was at, there wasn't very good internet. I was use to not hearing from him for days. Commo Blackouts last, usually, no longer than 3 days. It's more like 8-10 hours.
Here's why...

Treat Us 'Normal' During Deployment
I hesitated at the thought of writing this blog. I don't want anyone to take it as their donation of time, items, and support are not wanted. They are all extremely appreciated and needed. With that said, as an Army Wife of 5 years, I've become desensitized to what our family life is like when viewed by civilians.
When my husband deployed in 2009, I dreaded going back home. Hearing, "You are so Brave." or, "I could never do what you do?" or better yet, "Why isn't your husband calling more?", made me CRINGE. I decided that during deployment I would stay in Fayetteville, NC. Why? I felt normal here. I was one of thousands of wives going through the same thing. They NEVER said the stuff above. They treated me NORMAL.

Remember as you are reading, this is from my personal experience with my family. I know not all situations are the same. I understand it may be 'different' for you. My husband's ex-wife is not a crappy parent and my husband is not a deadbeat dad. They are two people that fell out of love and made mistakes along the way. Everyone is doing their best to try and do what's best for the kids. There is no book for this. There is no guide. Self-righteousness gets you no where!

The challenges I face within the military lifestyle are minimal to what my stepchildren endure I have the support of my fellow Army Wives, stepmothers, and many Military programs. I think I'll answer the question "What has been the biggest challenges for children of divorced parents, when one parent deploys?" or "What are some challenges kids face that do not live full time with their military parent?"

While my husband was deployed to Afghanistan, I had a favorite song. It was one I could listen to over and over. Sometimes it made me cry. Sometimes it made me smile. Whether happy or sad, I felt more connected to him when I listened to it.

I stumbled upon "I'm Dippin' Again!" by CBess83 in her Tumblr blog "Cook and let Afghani 'stand' for 9 months". She posts recipes weekly with tons of mouth watering pictures. The blog shows pictures of ingredients, during the creating, and the final product. CBess83 walks you through the recipes and then sprinkles some touching stories about her and her hubby Tyler.

Pets During Deployment
Are you a single Soldier deploying? Do you have a dog that you love and want back when you come home? Dog is man's best friend! It's hard for a service member to leave that best friend behind. It's harder when they have no one to leave them with.

If you are sending from the US, use the Flat Rate boxes. You’ll get really good at making alot of stuff fit in there. If you don’t have enough to fill it up, go buy more!
When considering what to purchase, keep the following in mind.
- It can take 2-3 weeks to get there.
- Soldier usually has access to Water and a Microwave.
- Things can MELT when it’s warmer.
- Don’t send contraband.

Don't Post Dates!
I've seen it over and over again. More so on Tumblr & Twitter. Ladies are counting down the arrival of their soldiers. Saying they are going to pick up their soldier tomorrow. Don't do it.
Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and many other sites you use, timestamp your posts. It's not hard to deduce what it means when you say, "I'm picking up my soldier tomorrow or this week." Same thing for photos! It takes little information to determine if that photo is recent or old from the information you blog about your life.
I didn't post a date. I said I'd be picking up my soldier this week.

What about when I drop him off to leave? They announced it in the Newspaper, what's the big deal?
Don't post pics of your goodbye until you know the troops have safely arrived down range. Yes, I know troop deployments are announced, however, actual date of arrival is not. When you post the pic that you just dropped off your soldier at a hangar or field and he's leaving, you've just told the 'bad guys' that our soldiers are coming.
What about when he comes home?
I know. I know. he's home. So you think what harm can that do? Well is he the last soldier coming home? Brigades do not arrive all in one flight or one day. Unless your soldier is the last one home, hold your information until all soldiers have arrived safely.
Army Wives Club, seriously, like the bad guys can find my blog....really?
Yes! It's quite easy. Look how our website reposts your pictures and things you say. If we can find your blogs, photos, and videos, so can they. AWC does it for sharing, fun, and friendship. I doubt this will be the intention of the 'bad guys'.
In closing..
We know you love your soldier. We know you want to shout it from the rooftop when he/she's home. We know you want to share what's going on in your life during deployment. Remember to error on the side of caution. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Please follow the OPSEC Rules. If you are unaware of what these are just ask. Please do not post any information regarding your loved ones deployment or redeployment dates. This is for our soldier’s safety as well as yours.
