AWC > Deployment > Care Packages: What Should I send? Board

Tumblr apple12191 asks: Do you all have any good advice for care packages?? like what i should do and etc. because i have no clue as to what to do

AWC Says:
Apple...May I call you Apple? :)
If you are sending from the US, use the Flat Rate boxes.  You’ll get really good at making alot of stuff fit in there.  If you don’t have enough to fill it up, go buy more!
When considering what to purchase, keep the following in mind.
  • It can take 2-3 weeks to get there.
  • Soldier usually has access to Water and a Microwave.
  • Things can MELT when it’s warmer.
  • Don’t send contraband.

What to Send
Here are some of things I sent to my Hubby during his deployment.
  • Popcorn
  • Peanuts
  • NutriGrain Bars or Quaker Oat Bars.
  • Keebler Cheese & Crackers or Peanut Butter & Crackers
  • Coffee(Ground): I should have listed this first cause it’s what he always asked for!
  • Candy:  Starburst, Jolly Ranchers, Circus Peanuts…etc.  If you send chocolate it may melt so seal it well and only do 1 of what ya get..just in case.
  • Hormel Compleats Meals - I would only send a couple.  Food is pretty decent down range.  It was just to give him something to eat if Chow Hall wasn’t open.
  • Spaghettios or Raviolli’s.  Again only a couple for when Chow Hall wasn’t open.
  • Bake him some COOKIES!  Just make sure to wrap them up well. Remember it could be 2 weeks before they get to their destination.  Sugar Cookies/Peanut Butter/Oatmeal Raisin are the best.  Avoid Frosting and Chocolate cause it might melt.
  • Oatmeal
  • Ramen
  • Pudding Snack Pack (The kind that does not need to be refrigerated)
  • Slim Jims or any kind of beef jerky.  (Not Pork)
  • Dole fruit cups
  • Any Dry Good or Anything in a can!
What else can I send besides food?
  • Send him a picture.  I sent my husband a picture from our wedding day in a card on our anniversary.
  • Go to the $1 store and buy some cheap toys.  It can get pretty boring during the down time.
  • I sent hubby a tiny remote control helicopter for Christmas.  He loved it!
  • Cards.  Go buy a few thinking of you cards.  When you get in the mood write a little note and send it off.  You can also send blanks cards for him to send you.  Kind of hard to get cards and thing down range.   Don’t worry bout stamps.  He/she can send mail for free.
  • If you have kids, have them draw him some pictures, or make him something.    I even drew some pics for him.  Get creative!  Make a collage!
  • Lip Balm & Sunblock
  • Toiletries.  He/she may have took everything needed when they deployed.  If you do need to send something like this send it seperately than food.  2-3 weeks with some AXE deodorant imagine what the food you packed with it will taste like. Anyone want some AXE cookies. BLECK!
  • Batteries.  Remember to seal them incase the break.  Put them in baggy and then in a plastic storage container.
  • Put an MP3 player in there with your favorite music and maybe a couple voice messages from you sprinkled through out.  If it’s one with a video screen, get to making some videos!  Get family and friends saying hi.  Take video of the kids and family pets.
  • DVDs, Magazine, and Books!  Again keep them appropriate.  Obscene and offensive materials will get confiscated.
 Things not to send!

Packages are scanned and these items will be confiscated.
  • Porn
  • Alcohol
  • Weapons
  • Propoganda
  • More than 1 Bible
  • Fruit IE: Don't send an apple ;)
